Event description

Description

What is Riverfly Monitoring?

Riverfly is a simple invertebrate survey method that can be used to detect changes in local water quality.

Riverflies, and other freshwater invertebrates, are a key part of the freshwater ecosystem and are a vital link in the aquatic food chain. Riverfly populations are affected by many factors; predominately water quality, habitat diversity, water level and flow rate. Different species of Riverfly have different tolerances to changes in water quality and therefore can be used as a high level indicator of pollution incidents.

You can find out more about the scheme by visiting our RIVERFLY WEBPAGE.

The Training Session

Time TBC

Location: 24 Denmark Road, Carshalton, SM52JG.

This training session will teach you everything you need to do to become a Riverfly Monitoring Volunteer.

No previous experience is needed as all training and equipment will be provided by SERT. The monitoring itself involves volunteers visiting the same site once a month and spending 1 - 2 hours taking their Riverfly sample and investigating what it contains.

We’re looking to recruit a dedicated volunteers to join our existing schemes on the Hogsmill (between Kingston and Ewell) and Wandle (between Wandsworth and Carshalton).

For more more information please email volunteering@southeastriverstrust.org or call Jess on 07741 872381.
