A short stretch of the river Thames in London hides a fascinating collection of not so secret locations and monuments associated with the defence of the realm. Hidden in plain sight they have featured in numerous television and film productions and always intrigue our imaginations. Our walk aims to uncover many facts and stories associated with these locations.
Our route starts out with Scotland Yard whose location has moved frequently since being set up, but it has never ventured far from its original location 1829 location. Onwards along the river we pass Whitehall and Palace of Westminster taking time to review notable statues, before reaching Millbank and the location of the home intelligence services.
Further along Millbank we encounter the site of the former Millbank Penitentiary. Built on the site of the current Tate modern it is the location from which criminals were deported to Australia. Next is a pub built for the wardens of the penitentiary.
At Vauxhall Cross we encounter the overseas intelligence service, and hear about some of its appearances on the big screen. We make our way to the impressive American Embassy, and take refreshments at a nearby cafe bar.
Finally, we relocate a mile or so upstream to see a memorial to the SOE and uncover our final not so secret location.
