Description

"River Collective" with Julian Costello - saxophone, Stefanos Tsourelis - oud and guitar, Maciek Pysz - guitar, Yuri Goloubev - double bass, Dave Jones - bass guitar, Eric Ford - drums, Adam Teixeira - drums. Tonights concert presents collaborations and music composed for the complete collective.

“River Collective” is now a popular annual concert placed in the heart of the London Jazz Festival which began as an idea between Julian Costello and Dave Jones through their work at Richmond Jazz School which hosts the event in the wonderful Queen Charlotte Hall in Richmond. The idea was to present two groups ‘Julian Costello Quartet’ and ‘Stefanos Tsourelis Trio’ within a joint concert with the added excitement of collaborations and music written for the combined collective of seven musicians. With the later emergence of “Vertigo” now three amazing groups perform to create a unique evening of jazz, world music traditions, collective improvisation and unique original music written especially for this festival concert.

Julian Costello Quartet led by saxophonist Julian Costello released the album Transitions in 2017 to great acclaim. Recorded at The Artesuono Studios in Udine in Italy the album is conceptual in that the first seven tracks act as a segue and as well as musical transitions it tells the story of transitions we all experience in our lives.

Maciek Pysz is a Paris based guitarist who has received critical acclaim for his many recordings. His debut album ‘Insight’ features Yuri Goloubev and Asaf Sirkis.

Yuri Goloubev is one of the most in demand and acclaimed double bassists in Europe, “the perfect mastery of his instrument and his deep capacity for writing .. deeply rooted in his experiences from worlds of classics and jazz..” - Francisco Cruz, Jazz News.

Adam Teixeira on drums and tabla is now based in London and leads his own trio “Adam Teixeira alternates with perfect intuition between pushing forward and supportively underpinning at the drums” - Ian Ballamy

Stefanos Tsourelis Trio is led by Stefanos Tsourelis who is known for his versatility and ability to move across styles and genres on both the Guitar and Oud. The music is a fusion of Mediterranean melodies and rhythms with jazz improvisation and dynamic grooves developed collaboratively with the members of the trio.

Dave Jones' writing has been described “sophisticated and nuanced” - London Jazz News’. He leads ‘Dave Jones Nonet’ and his playing has placed him alongside musicians Steve Gadd, Howard Levy and Ronnie Scott’s Soul and Jazz Orchestra.

Eric Ford is one of the most in demand jazz drummers in London and can play with real empathy while also being very capable of intense virtuosic solos and high energy expression.

The new Julian Costello Quartet came together in 2016. The Quartet played venues across London and in April 2017 recorded an album called Transitions at The Artesuono Studios in Udine in Italy with ECM engineer Stefano Amerio. The album was released in September 2017 on 33Jazz Records. The album is conceptual in that the first seven tracks act as a segue and as well as musical transitions it tells the story of transitions we all experience in our lives. They toured the Uk in 2017 and 2018 with support from the Arts Council of England as well as dates across France and a tour of Poland, Germany and Belgium in March 2019.

Once in a while, an album like this appears on the horizon” London Jazz News.

"Its one of those albums which creates it's own mood, an album to listen to from beginning to end....and then come back to it, time after time. Musicianship in service of the music more than the ego". Ken Avis (US Critic)

Vertigo is a London based trio featuring Stefanos Tsourelis – Oud/Guitar Adam Teixeira – Tabla/Percussion Julian Costello – Soprano Sax. Vertigo offers music that is fresh, cinematic and eclectic. It is an unusual and innovative combination of instruments (sax, oud and tabla) that draws on many traditions and approaches to composition and improvisation. We take rhythms and colours from different parts of the world and use them as a basis for collective improvisation. “ travels real and imagined to create a warm and resonant soundscape that is as accessible as it is exotic".
