Details and Safety Information

Our activities will take place at Sandbanks, Poole starting at 08:30 with a mandatory safety briefing.

Different clubs from across the Branch will be attending the event.

The clubs instructors will be present all day to supervise our students.

In addition, Poole will have some of their members present to provide training and safety cover. Instructors will also attend from additional lifesaving clubs to supervise their own students. As we are holding the event on Poole’s beach, RNLI lifeguards will be present throughout the day.

Changing facilities are basic (in the form of two garages). Water temperature will be checked throughout the day, as we will only allow students to swim in waters 14oC or warmer. We will also have safeguards in place in case anyone does start to show signs of becoming cold. When your son/daughter returns home, please ensure they have a warm shower to wash off any remaining residues and to ensure they are thoroughly warmed through.

What do I need to bring?

Swimwear, shorts and t-shirt must be worn for swimming in.

Please bring two sets of shorts and t-shirts to wear into the sea, and two swim costumes/shorts/trunks. One for the morning and a second for the afternoon. This will prevent wet (and cold) clothes having to be re-worn.

If you own or have access to a wetsuit, please bring this to wear to help keep warm. The first signs of cold, shivering etc., you will be taken out of the water to get changed and warm up.

You will also need some pumps (just cheap ones!) that can get wet and sandy, or a pair of wetsuit boots or shoes. Footwear MUST be worn at all times including in the water, so need to be fairly lightweight.

Please bring at least two large/beach towels with you.

We recommend (highly recommend) warm and loose fitting clothing to wear after the swimming. From experience there is no chance of fitting into skinny jeans after being in open water! And jeans in general are not recommended.

Jogging pants, t-shirt and hoodie are best, or even a onesie for the car ride home! If you’d prefer to bring two sets of warm clothes, please do so – layers are going to be extremely important when you’ve been in the water.

Coats (preferably the fleecy type) also need to be brought with you, which will fit over clothing layers. And don’t forget some dry footwear to wear home!

There will be no facilities for valuables to be safely locked away – therefore we implore you to leave these at home or with parents. Valuables are left in the garages at your own risk, and will not be covered from theft or if damaged by water. Neither your club, Wessex Branch nor RLSS UK can be held responsible if your valuables are lost, stolen or damaged.

Safety Briefing

A full safety briefing will be provided at the start of the day. It is important that you follow any instructions given to you by one of the Organisers, instructors or lifeguards must be followed.

Following the safety briefing, you will be using some beach lifesaving equipment (courtesy of RLSS Poole and RLSS Boscombe Lifeguard Clubs). This will allow everyone to experience the different techniques used in open water compared to a swimming pool environment and hopefully have some fun with it.

We aim to finish the day by 16:30.

Food & Refreshments

We’ll break for lunch around 12 noon / 12:30 for approx. half an hour.

A packed lunch will need to be brought from home, including plenty of drinks.

How do I book my place?

There is no fee to attend the day, but you do need to book your place by booking a place on the Branch Eventbrite page. You will receive a confirmation email which you will need to bring with you.

Please complete the enclosed ‘RLSS Use of Photographs” document. We would like to provide photos to the lifesaving magazine of this event, and would invite attending clubs to publicise locally if they wish to do so.

If for any reason you cannot attend, or need to cancel your place, please let us know by emailing . It is vital that we have correct confirmed numbers.

If you have any queries, no matter how small, please just ask!

Finally, we would just like to take this opportunity to thank you again for your continued support.

Many thanks,

RLSS Wessex Branch Youth Team
