A stunning walk across Morecambe Bay starting in Arnside and finishing in Kents Bank led by Queens Guide Cedric Robinson MBE.
The Queen’s Guide, Cedric Robinson MBE will lead this exciting and historic walk as well as celebrate his 54th year of leading walks across Morecambe Sands. The walk starts at Arnside across to Kents Bank, giving participants the chance to enjoy stunning scenery & wildlife whilst taking in the panoramic views of surrounding Lakeland & Lancashire Hills.
A little bit of History
The Queen's Guide to the Sands is the royally appointed guide to crossing the sands of Morecambe Bay, an ancient and potentially dangerous tidal crossing in northwest England. As of 2016[update], the Guide is Cedric Robinson MBE, who became the 25th guide in 1963. The guide is paid a nominal salary of only £15 a year but the holder of the post also has the use of the 700-year-old Guide's Cottage at Kents Bank, which is owned by the Crown and managed by the Duchy of Lancaster
The first official guide was appointed by the Duchy of Lancaster on 29 January 1548, a Thomas Hogeson
Until the building of the railway in 1857, the cross sands route had been a major transport route in the area, with Guides appointed royally since the 16th century. Before that, the monks of Furness at Cartmel Priory had provided guides for crossing the sands. In modern times a crossing of the sands has become a popular challenge walk for charity fundraisers, with Cedric often leading groups of up to 500 people. These walks are typically once a fortnight (from spring to autumn), from either Hest Bank or Arnside over to Flookburgh Point or Kents Bank—tide and river levels (the River Kent has to be crossed at some point) allowing—and are often in support of a charity.
We are delighted that the Cross Bay Walk will return for another year for RNLI due to popular demand and hope to see as many people as possible come forward to take part. The event promises to be great fun and challenging so come along and join in- You might even spot a lifeboat en route!
We would be extremely grateful if you would consider raising sponsorship to benefit our volunteer lifeboat crews in addition to your entry fee. There is no minimum target and we very much appreciate every penny you can raise – why not aim for £54 which is the equivalent cost of a pair of wellies for one of our crew?
Please note, as well as being lots of fun, the walk is quite challenging as it goes through water and uneven ground in places. The RNLI and Cedric Robsinson (MBE) take the safety of our walkers very seriously and the Cross Bay Walk can be cancelled at the very last minute if the tides, sand and weather are not safe to continue with the walk. Please ensure your contact details (telephone, mobile, email) are entered correctly on the booking form so we can contact you with information.
