Event description

Description

This fantastic location goes back to 1687, it was a court in the past with a jailer and cells . This Guildhall is filled to the brim with historical stories and with a couple of ghosts lingering round as well it is definitley worth a visit!

Sir Cloudesley Shovell, a local Rochester MP and Admiral who paid for the decorative plaster ceiling of the Guildhall met his demise when he ran his fleet aground off the Isles of Scilly in 1707 – staff members can occasionally smell his pipe at the landing at the top of the Grand Staircase. The Museum holds a silver plate of his in the museum that was recovered from his shipwreck.

Also, in the other building on site (dates from about 1903) a member of staff has seen a ghostly apparition of a girl running past her on the stairs and there has also been a similar sighting on the grand staircase of the Guildhall.

Staff have felt a strong feeling of unease as if someone is watching them when opening up the door to the lower deck of the Hulks exhibition , the caretaker also makes a swift exit when locking up!
