    Dorset is one of the finest climbing destinations in the South East. The Limestone cliffs of the Swanage coast stretch for some 3 miles and offer a bewildering array of climbing routes. Coastal scenery and routes are spectacular and with some of the driest and warmest climates in the UK.

    Before you book onto a Rock Climbing Instructor training course, make sure you have done the following:

    • You must be registered on the scheme.

    You must have an up to date logbook (preferably DLOG) with evidence of the following:

    • 15 led routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection.
    • 15 led routes at a climbing wall.
    • 5 led routes which must be outdoor bolt-protected sport climbs.

    Scope of the scheme

    A qualification holder can operate on:

    Single pitch trad and sport crags

    Indoor and outdoor bouldering venues

    Climbing walls & towers


    A single pitch venue is:

    Described as single pitch in a guidebook

    Allows climbers to be lowered to the ground

    Non-tidal and has little objective danger

    Presents no difficulties on approach or retreat, such as route finding, scrambling or navigating


    The scheme does not cover:

    General mountaineering

    Multi-pitch rock climbing

    Teaching lead climbing skills

    Access to tidal sea cliffs or any other location where retreat is not easily possible


    REGISTRATION

    Candidate Registration Requirements

    Be 18 years old

    Be an experienced indoor and outdoor rock climber.

    Have a genuine interest in climbing and the supervision of groups.

    Be a member of a mountaineering council (British Mountaineering Council, Mountaineering Ireland, Mountaineering Scotland)


    TRAINING COURSE

    Candidate Requirements:

    Led at least 15 graded rock climbs with traditional protection.

    Led at least 15 climbing wall routes.

    Led at least 5 outdoor bolt protected sport climbs.


    Minimum Course Duration

    24 hours.

    Delivered in a 3 day programme. Courses can be split into 3 individual days (maximum) if delivered within a 3 month period. 8 hours must be spent in a climbing wall.

    If all candidates are Climbing Wall Instructor/Climbing Wall Award trained (not necessarily assessed) providers can deliver a 2 day Rock Climbing Instructor training course.

    James has had over 15 years experience in outdoor activity leadership, coaching and guiding.

    He is a qualified mountain instructor, teaching climbing, abseiling, ice climbing and navigation skills. He is also a qualified canoeing and kayaking coach on rivers and at sea. He also teaches bushcraft and is a British Canoeing Camp Craft and Expedition Skills provider.

    The experience of being in nature can be uplifting and transformational. James specialises in working with people who have had very little opportunity of experiencing nature, either due to limited life chances or to suffering from mental health issues, in order to share with them the life-enhancing effects that being in wilderness can bring.
