Event description

Description

Mental health for the 21st century: a morning to explore diagnosis based information about mental health, plus take part in a discussion based afternoon that really challenges the way mental health services are delivered.

Facilitated by Dr.Sandra Walker, co-director of the Good Mental Health Cooperative and director of Sanity Books. Dr.Walker currently works as an Advanced Clinical Academic at North Bristol NHS Trust. Her PhD research focused on experience of self harm, and she championed service user involvement in mental health research while working at the University of Southampton. Sandy is bringing you this workshop as part of one of the Good Mental Health Cooperative's current projects, the Mental Wealth Academy, which supports people to access community based activities to help with inclusion, recovery and good mental health.

What to expect on the day....

The morning session will focus on sharing information about common experiences of mental ill-health - what is it like living with anxiety and depression? Is this illness or just life? Sandy will also discuss the self harm spectrum and some of the misconceptions commonly held around this.

The afternoon session will feature discussion based workshops. Sandy will give a short talk to introduce each workshop and then facilitate discussion around the following topics:

  • What if the Mental Health Diagnostic Manuals are wrong?

  • Powered by Personality Disorder - can that energy be harnessed for good?

  • Mental health services - they're not prejudiced, right?

The day workshop is open to people working in mental health services, those with lived experience of mental ill-health, and carers or family members.

Parking: If you're travelling by car to the John Pounds Centre, there is a multi-storey car park nearby. Alternatively, if you park in a nearby road on the same side as the JP Centre, you can buy an all-day parking ticket for £1 - just go into the Housing Office inside the JP Centre and ask for a permit.

Refreshments: Tea and coffee will be available on arrival, but you will need to bring along or buy other refreshments and lunch for the day - there is the John Pounds Cafe or nearby shops.

By registering your name and email address for any workshop, you agree to be added to the Good Mental Health Coop mailing list. Personal contact information is gathered for the sole purpose of communications via our email newsletter site hosted by Mailchimp. You can easily unsubscribe at any time. Details remain confidential and will never be passed on to any third party except as required by UK law.

About the Mental Wealth Academy

The Mental Wealth Academy supports people to access community based activities and workshops which help with inclusion, recovery and good mental health. The support is intended for people who have experienced serious life challenges, are socially isolated, anxious or lacking in confidence. This may include experience of mental ill-health, addictions, disability, bereavement, caring responsibilities for example.

At the Good Mental Health Cooperative, we believe that connecting with others, and informal learning opportunities, are really important steps to good mental health, bringing a sense of inclusion and challenge, rather than feeling isolated and lacking in purpose.

This is an introductory programme, with funding provided by the Big Lottery for the free workshops and courses.
