Dr Alastair Robertson is an NHS Consultant in Occupational Health at University Hospital Birmingham and Consultant in Occupational Lung Disease at the Birmingham Chest Clinic. He also lectures at the University of Birmingham as Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Medicine
His talk on “Rocks and Respiratory Health” will look briefly at the historical background to the realisation that mineral dusts cause significant respiratory morbidity and mortality. He will discuss the current global impact of dust related occupational lung disease and will look at some specific mineral related lung diseases such as silica, asbestos and coal. Other less common minerals will also be described. By special request he will also talk about the lung effects of volcanic eruptions.
