Book a place at our next Republic of Ireland webinar where we will be giving an overview of the impacts of environmental noise on human health and how the Environmental Noise Directive aims to avoid, prevent and reduce those negative and harmful effects. The strong link between noise (and sound) and the three pillars of sustainability will also be considered.

The European Environment Agency has reported that exposure to environmental noise is a widespread problem in Europe, with at least one in five people exposed to levels considered harmful to health. In fact, noise caused by transport is considered to be the second most significant environmental cause of ill health in western Europe, behind fine particulate matter pollution.

Given the negative impacts on human health and the large number of people affected environmental noise is, therefore, a significant concern for citizens and policymakers.

This session will be especially beneficial to those working in Environmental Impact Assessment, particularly within transport infrastructure, and all those interested in sustainability challenges and opportunities.

Speaker

Stephen Byrne Transport Infrastructure Ireland

Stephen is a Senior Scientist (Environment) with Transport Infrastructure Ireland. He holds a range of postgraduate qualifications in Engineering, Environment & Planning, and Acoustics. He also holds qualifications in Business Sustainability Management and Economics for Business. Stephen leads TII's strategic noise mapping project under the Environmental Noise Regulations. He is a working group member of several CEN committees and is a Project Executive Board member of the CEDR Noise and Nuisance Research programme. He is currently a tutor for the Environmental Noise module with the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics & Noise Control. He has published papers on road and railway noise. In addition, Stephen is environmental and sustainability lead on TII's public transport projects including MetroLink. Stephen is a Chartered Environmentalist and full member of IEMA.
