Roman Queer Frontier: An introduction.

This is the first in a 10 workshop series culminating in the publishing of Roman Queer Frontier Zine.

In this session, we will focus on the North-East before the Roman Invasion.

Let’s explore how Britain was divided during the Iron Age, what life was like for people before Rome, social, gender and marital customs, and of course, the Last Queen of the North, Cartimandua.

Gender and Sexuality are modern concepts, but the world of the Celts and Romans was progressive by Medieval standards if you know where to look!

If you’re curious to know about this land, its people, and what customs survive Roman colonisation, this session will help bring it back to life. It sets the scene for further workshops and talks, taking us through the Roman era, from the blending of Gods, site visits, and how Rome handled the empire's frontier, which wasn’t as cooperative as they’d have liked.

Roman Queer Frontier is funded by English Heritage Community Connections Fund.
