Event description

Description

Join us at Europe House in London at 18.30 on Tuesday 26 February for an evening to celebrate the Romanian language. The event aims to introduce non-Romanians to the linguistic dimensions of this beautiful Carpathian country. It coincides with Romanian's presidency of the Council of the European Union and is held in conjunction with the Romanian Cultural Institute.

Romanian is a Romance language, the closest to Latin among its linguistic relatives, and the only one to be spoken in Eastern Europe. The evening will open with an introduction to the history and culture of the Romanian language by Dr Diana Georgescu of University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies. A short break will then equip those who need it with a glass of Romanian wine to help prepare the tongue for a taster class delivered by Ramona Gönczöl, also of SSEES. By the end of the evening you should be comfortable ordering sarmale in Sibiu or pălincă in Ploiești!

Tickets are free of charge but places are limited and registration is essential at the link on this page. Our language evenings are popular and applications often exceed venue capacity. If you register and cannot attend, please cancel your ticket in good time to allow those on the waiting list to take your ticket, by following these instructions or emailing paul.kaye@ec.europa.eu. Please help us to avoid the frustration of empty seats at a fully-booked event.

Please also note that security arrangements at Europe House may require you to undergo a security scan on arrival at the venue. For the same reason, in bookings of more than one ticket, the name of each individual attendee must be indicated.
