Start point: Waterhead LDNPA car park, Ambleside
Length: 4 km (2.5 miles) with 125m (410 ft) of ascent
Time: 2 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 3 (see grade description below)
This walk begins with a stroll through Borrans Park with glorious views down Lake Windermere. It then moves on to visit the remains of the Roman Fort of Galava originally built around AD79 to protect vital trade routes through Cumbria. Finally into Skelghyll Woods where the Champion Tree Trail contains some of the tallest trees in England including a Grand Fir that is 58m high.
Paths are generally good but there are some sections that will be muddy and/or slippery in poor weather. There is a steep climb in the middle of the walk, a steep descent on terrain that can be loose, rocky and slippery and there are kissing gates on the route.
Grade 3 walks may include some moderate ascents and descents. The path surface might be earth, grass or stone and – while generally firm – it will have some loose or uneven sections, or be soft underfoot after rain. You will also encounter steps, gates or stiles and narrow sections. Most of our grade 3 walks are suitable for families.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather. Weather permitting, we will be stopping for a short break on route so please bring refreshments if you wish. This route is not suitable for pushchairs.
