Event description
Join us for this exciting online session inspired by artist Romare Bearden!

About this Event

If you can't make the live session - do not fear - We will email the recording an hour after the class finishes to everyone that books! You can watch this once within 3 days.

“You put down one color and it calls for an answer. You have to look at it like a melody.”- Romare Bearden

Co-Director of the Romare Bearden Foundation, Diedra Harris-Kelley and LDG tutor, Frances Stanfield will guide you through Bearden’s pioneering approach to collage, his love of Jazz and the powerful effect it had on his art. We are extremely excited to be running this live, online class with a very special guest, Diedra Harris-Kelley, artist, educator, writer and Nanette and Romare Bearden’s niece!

Born 1911 in Charlotte, NC, Bearden grew up in Harlem, New York City and Pittsburgh hearing Uptown Jazz and the Blues. He worked in numerous media but is best known for storytelling with scissors which he did by manipulating photographs and coloured paper with tireless experimentation.

Bearden used personal memories and aspects of African-American culture within his artwork. He layered both flat and textured paper, composing and placing figures with incredible attention and often balancing busy details with areas of stillness and quiet. Although the nature of cutting paper creates fractured spaces and forms, Bearden harmonised the relationship and spaces between figures, giving them a powerful physical presence as well as strengthening universal themes and experiences.

“I think he chose collage because it’s a method that breaks what we normally see or how we normally see, deconstructs it and puts it back together in a way that makes new meaning…He found a way to talk about diversity and a way to talk about fractured cultures, all in collage.” - Diedra Harris Kelley.

Frances and Diedra will engage you in Bearden’s rhythmic and expressive way of working to inspire and encourage you in your own creative endeavours.

You will be making some of your cutouts by referencing a series of images which will be presented to you - please also see below for a list of materials that you will need.
