Event description
A training course designed for outdoor learning and play practitioners who wish to develop and enhance their basic practical skills.

About this Event

Eòlas Outdoor Learning is delivering a one-day ‘Ropes, Tarps and Shelters’ training course designed for outdoor learning and outdoor play practitioners who wish to develop and enhance their basic practical skills. The course will focus on the safe use of ropes, tarps and associated equipment ensuring that students will be able to operate confidently and effectively with their new skills.

Specifically, the course will cover:

• Risk Assessment considerations, especially in respect of ropes and swings

• Some essential and memorable knots that have many practical uses

• Rope techniques that can be used for a variety of practical and play purposes

• Options for erecting tarp shelters in woodland or elsewhere

• Swings and slacklines – safe and ‘tree friendly’ methods

• Use of ropes, tarps and associated equipment in a play and learning setting

• Equipment selection – the various choices available based on use and budget

The cost of the course includes documentation and handouts detailing and illustrating most of the techniques covered on the course.

We are limiting the number of students on the course to 4 (or 4 households) to enable us to comply with the current restrictions of no more than 5 households meeting outdoors at the same time. If you are planning on buying more than one ticket for the same household, can you please advise the organiser to enable the number of participants to be adjusted. The nature of the activities during the training day will easily allow social distancing and full compliance with all recommendations for everyone's safety.

Scott Jones who will be delivering the course is the founder of Eòlas Outdoor Learning and has been delivering outdoor learning opportunities since 2002. Scott qualified as a Forest School practitioner in 2008 and since then, has worked extensively with learners of all ages and abilities, including children and young adults with additional support needs.

Going back a few more years, Scott graduated in Glasgow as a biologist in 1984 and initially worked as a scientific officer with the NHS after which he completed a successful 30-year career in the police service retiring in 2017. During those years he gained extensive and wide-ranging experience and qualifications in an array of specialised disciplines.

Scott is a fully qualified and experienced outdoor sports instructor who specialised in white water kayaking even though at present he no longer pursues this interest. Coaching this discipline involved teaching and regularly executing white water safety and rescue techniques which required a high level of expertise in using ropes and other equipment to effect quick and successful rescues. Many of these useful and exciting techniques are transferable to the outdoor learning environment.

Scott has combined his lifelong outdoor passion and his desire to help others by providing programmes and courses to numerous clients over the years including Scottish Natural Heritage, Cairngorms National Park Authority, Scottish Forestry, NHS (Scotland), Capability Scotland and a large number of schools in several authority areas.
