Event Details

Rory Mcleod - ex-circus clown and fire eater. A one man soulband & poet, singing his own unique upbeat dance stories told with with verve, sharpness, humour and warmth about people and for people. A modern travelling troubadour using tap shoes, acappella, harmonica, guitar, trombone, spoons, finger cymbals, bandorea, djembe and various percussion instruments!

BEST LIVE ACT: BBC RADIO 2 FOLK AWARDS
TEXAS HARMONICA CHAMPION
EDINBURGH FESTIVAL STREET BUSKER OF THE YEAR

Watch:
A rhythmic storyteller, multi-instrumentalist, telling unpalatable truths about broken hearts… social injustice… in songs, that are percussive, bold, lyrical, deeply personal …and have an unexpected edge to them.

Rory has played harmonica and guitar with ANI DI FRANCO, MICHELLE SHOCKED, MICHAEL FRANTI, TOWNES VAN ZANDT, BUTCH HANCOCK, with the West-African guitarist ALI FARKE-TOURE and TAJ MAHAL; and Madagascan group TARIKA. He's enjoyed creative collaborations with HASSAN ERRAJI, KATHRYN TICKEL and PAUL RODDEN- virtuosos, respectively, of the Moroccan Oud, the Northumbrian pipes and the Irish banjo.

Rory has travelled the globe for different reasons at different times, from Asia to the middle East from Gambia to Cuba, Central America, Australia, North America, Canada, Europe and other nooks and crannies of the earth.

"You don't listen to McLeod you travel with him" - City Hub, Sydney (Australia)

"I've travelled to look for work, to mend a broken heart, to be with someone I longed for. I'd travel to visit friends and on the way I'd make new ones, I'd roam because I was curious to see what was around the next corner." - Rory

He has a natural troubadour's talent for weaving magical, musical, storytelling spells accompanied by his own bizarre solo orchestra of distinctive instruments that accompany the "rich, raw, deep and resonant" voice of this "singular and liberating performer."

McLEOD is a musical Gypsy, his eccentric melodies infused with influences from Flamenco to Country blues, through to Celtic, East European and Calypso rhythms creating a style of music and songwriting that has been described as "Intimate, revealing, political and powerful."

"Great songs to dance to, infectious rhythms, flying harmonica!"

This event forms part of SO:To Speak 2017 - Southampton's festival of words. See http://www.sotospeakfestival.org/

Travel information:-

We are a city centre venue and parking can be in short supply.  If you are driving, please make sure you leave plenty of time to find a space click here for a map of where the nearest parking spaces can be found.

We recommend Kings Park Road car park:
We are about 10 minutes walk from Southampton City Centre train station (head up the hill toward the Guildhall clock tower) and on the route for most city centre buses (the Unilink U1 stops virtually outside.)

 Accessibility info:-

Events are generally suitable for adults, young people and older children - children must be accompanied by an adult at all times, however. Young children are also welcome to come along but be aware some poems and songs may contain adult content (although we try to keep these until after children have left!)

Most events are held on our first floor, accessible by a wide staircase with a sturdy banner. Comformatable seating is provided.  We regret that, due to space and other constraints, we are generally unable to relocate our events to the ground floor for those who require ground level access - so sorry.
