Event description

Description

Roses and Castles is the colourful canal folk art used to decorate working narrowboats in the 19th century. Using authentic methods and materials, you can create your own masterpiece, in an authentic setting, on board our 70 foot Narrowboat, ‘Prince Henry.’

After attending a course himself, Stretford based sign-writer, Fred Worthington, fell in love with this traditional artwork and has been running workshops for over eight years. During the course of the day, Fred will show you how to layer your painting, using the time-honoured methods of the boatman, to create your own distinctive design.

The exact origins of the Roses and Castles images are unknown, but there are obvious links with Romany culture, and historians have also identified similarities with folk art from Germany, Holland and even Asia. The movement‘s popularity and growth was tied to the limited size of the boat cabins, a strong sense of domestic pride and the increased competition between the canals and railways resulting in more women and children coming to live aboard.

There are two six hour workshops to choose from:

ROSES: Saturday 24th February Book tickets here. Press the green ‘Tickets’ button.

CASTLES: Sunday 25th February Book tickets at http://bit.ly/2jVS96O

Price: £30 per day (plus bookings fee) inclusive of all materials, brushes and practice boards.

You will leave with your own individual painted canvas to take home, or if you have an object of your own, that you would like to paint, please feel free to bring it along ensuring the background is painted to your prefered colour.

Due to the type of paint used please wear old clothes and shoes.

Please bring a packed lunch. Complimentary tea and coffee will be provided.

The boat will be moored adjacent to Stretford Marina, on Marland Way. Your All Aboard representative will meet you at the marina and escort you on board.

There are steps on board the boat, and surfaces can become slippy if wet, so please where suitable footwear and clothing.
