Event Details

How can businesses working in a shared rotation collaborate to assess and manage the health of the soils they share?

Come along to hear about this GREATsoils field lab where three businesses, Jepco, Worth Farms, and Loveden Estates, are working together to address soil health. The field lab aims to improve soil health and organic matter in a shared rotation of an arable/horticulture system, assessing effects of cover crops on cash crop yield and quality. This field lab is also part of the Innovative Farmers programme.

Programme for the day

13.00 Arrival Lunch Tea/Coffee

14.00  Welcome and introduction to the Field Lab. Aspects of developing a joint, long-term strategy for soil fertility across farms, sectors and businesses. Collaborative rotation planning involving all parties who are using the land at some stage in its rotation. Short presentation of the running trials on the three farms, assessing the cost-benefits of increased use of cover crops in a long-term strategy to improve soil health and fertility.
Led by Anja Vieweger, The Organic Research Centre

15.00 Visit to 2-3 field trial sites, discussion of easy on-farm methods for setting up your own trials with cover crops.
Feedback from the growers and farmers on their experiences with this collaboration for a joint strategy to increase the health and fertility of their soils in the long-term. Results of the first year of trials with cover crops.
Led by Nick Sheppard and Ben Dodsen from Jepco, Anthony Campling from Loveden Estates, and Simon Day from Worth Farms

17.00 Feedback and finish

Who should come? The workshops are aimed at growers, but may also be useful for farmers and advisors. We expect that growers will already have a basic understanding of the link between soil health and plant health and will be looking to understand more about this and how soil testing can be used to strengthen their growing system.

Workshops are open to all, however in the event of high demand, preference is given to AHDB levy payers and Associate Members. Find out more about the benefits of AHDB Associate Membership.

Places are limited so book early!
