Roughing it in Prague: A talk by Rob Humphreys
Thu 4 May 2017, 19:30 – 21:00 BST
The BCSA is delighted to host a talk by Rob Humphreys, author of the Rough Guides to Prague and Czechoslovakia.
Now a Blue Badge London guide, Yorkshire-born Rob’s introduction to things Czechoslovak was through the children’s games his father (a lecturer in Czech and Russian at Leeds University) brought back from trips behind the Iron Curtain. A nascent acting career came to an end when – somewhat to his surprise – Rob was asked in 1988 to write the Rough Guide to Czechoslovakia. The Velvet Revolution threw months of careful research work into disarray, but eventually the first of what proved to be several editions of the book was published in 1991. The Rough Guide to Czechoslovakia (and subsequently to the Czech and Slovak Republics) was followed by the Rough Guide to Prague and several other destinations, including Vienna, St Petersburg, Scotland and London.
Rob will evoke the adventures, mishaps, strange encounters and surprises encountered during the writing of his guidebooks, as well as commenting on the changes brought about by the Velvet Revolution and by the internet.
The event follows the BCSA’s Annual General Meeting at 6.30pm (for BCSA members only).
