Family Friendly Working on the Frontline

Parents and carers whose roles are shift or site based can often struggle to get the same access to flexible working as their desk-based colleagues who can work from home. Working practices can vary hugely between roles within the same organisation, with access to flex often line-manager-dependent who have inconsistent approaches to managing flexible working requests. Employers run the risk of creating a ‘them and us’ working culture between those who have flex, and those who don’t.

Our recently published Working Families Index research suggested that workers from higher income families had better access to remote and hybrid working. The research showed that half of shift workers have a weekly struggle to organise childcare, and almost half felt they had little or no control over their work schedules.

But there was good news. Parents who were working flexibly were twice as likely to feel they had control over working arrangements, demonstrating the positive power of flex.
