Roundtable on strengthening the connection between places and universities

About this Event

UK universities play a critical role in supporting the economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing of the places in which they are located. Last year the UPP Foundation established the Civic University Commission to explore and understand what a modern civic university is and what it should do.

The key finding from the Commission was that while there continued to be a significant amount of civic engagement across the higher education sector, the Commission almost never heard of a strategy that made place based civic engagement a core part of the university’s mission. This finding led the Commission to recommend the creation of Civic University Agreements (CUA) – strategies rooted in a robust and shared analysis of local needs and opportunities.

This chaired roundtable over a private breakfast, will bring together university representatives, local government, policy makers, and key policy influencers. Those involved in the Commission will also attend, including the Chair, Lord Kerslake, former Head of the Civil Service, and members of the panel drawn from the worlds of policy, business, civil society and the university sector itself.

The event will address the following questions:

1. How best can truly civic universities continue to contribute positively to local communities?

2. How can local councils and other stakeholders get the most from universities?

3. How do we collaboratively plan for local need?
