Event description
Round-table Seminar on ‘Church of Sanctuary’

About this Event

Come and hear about the Church of Sanctuary initiative from Churches Together in Britain and Ireland and how your congregation can get involved.

Church of Sanctuary (https://churchofsanctuary.org/) is a way to support churches become places of safety and sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

This meeting will be useful for anyone involved in local church leadership and a passion for working with refugees. Groups involved with Welcome Churches and With Refugees Scotland are especially welcome to have a chance to explore how the movement can grow and support one another.

Join us for this free two hour round-table seminar to discuss a shared commitment between the Churches for diaconal, prophetic and pastoral work on issues relating to migration, especially with those who are asylum seekers and refugees and providing an opportunity to promote the concept of Church of Sanctuary.

The seminar will hear from the Rev Dr Inderjit Bhogal, one of the founders of the City of Sanctuary movement. (https://cityofsanctuary.org/)

Note:

The offices are within a 20 minute walk, or 10 minute taxi ride during rush hour, of Edinburgh's two main train stations at Waverley and Haymarket, as well as its bus station at St Andrew's Square. Buses serving the city include Megabus, Scottish Citylink and Stagecoach, which operates the Fife park and ride facility from Inverkeithing. Edinburgh Airport is approximately 30 minutes away by tram, bus or car. A park and ride facility also exists at nearby Ingliston.

You can also take a bus across the city, with the closest stops along Princes Street. City bus services include Lothian Buses and First Bus.

The offices in George Street have wheelchair-friendly access, which is adjacent to the 'traditional' entrance. Once inside the building, a lift enables those with mobility problems to access all floors. A toilet for the disabled is available on the ground floor. There are also a number of parking bays for those with the official blue disabled parking permits immediately outside the office.

Parking

There are facilities along George Street and South Castle Street, but parking can be notoriously difficult at times and it is not recommended that visitors use the parking bays outside the offices if they are likely to be staying for a long time. Parking costs are 45p for every 15 minutes, up to a maximum of three hours (£5.40), and charges apply from 8.30am to 6.30pm. Traffic wardens operate in the area at all times. There are a number of longer term parking facilities within a 20 minute walk of the offices at Morrison Street and Kings Stables Road.
