Event description
Breakfast roundtable with Cllr Tony Page, 12 February 2020

About this Event

On 31st March 2020, SP Broadway is hosting a Politics of Planning Breakfast with Cllr Tony Page, Deputy Leader of Reading Borough Council.

Cllr Page has served as a Labour councillor since 1973, representing the ward of Abbey. He has been Deputy Leader of the Council since 2008 and is also the Lead Member for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport. Reading Borough Council is a unitary authority and is controlled by the Labour Party with a majority of 18.

The Reading Borough Local Plan was formally adopted on 4th November 2019, with Cllr Page calling it “one of the most radical plans in the South East”.

“Our new local plan will ensure the right infrastructure is in place to support new housing and it will have a key role to play in protecting open spaces and wildlife areas, and places Reading’s rich heritage at the heart of decision-making”.

“This is Reading’s most radical Local Plan ever with a major emphasis on tackling the climate emergency locally and the shortage of affordable housing”

With the new Elizabeth line opening in 2021, Reading is rapidly expanding its reputation as both a thriving commuter town and as a desirable place to live and work, with a total of 2,885 homes across the town given planning permission so far. This notably includes 618 homes at Reading FC’s Madejski Stadium and 538 flats in the town centre.

In February 2019, Reading joined 40 other councils in declaring a climate emergency, committing to achieve carbon neutrality in the borough by 2030. The motion was tabled by Cllr Page.

SP Broadway is delighted to welcome Cllr Page to our Politics of Planning roundtable for a discussion on planning and development in Reading, and to hear his vision for the borough. We hope you will join us.
