Event description
Breakfast roundtable with Cllr Paul Bettison, 28 April 2020

About this Event

SP Broadway is hosting a Politics of Planning Breakfast with Cllr Paul Bettison OBE, Leader of Bracknell Forest Council on 28 April 2020.

Cllr Bettison has been a Conservative councillor for 27 years, representing the ward of Little Sandhurst and Wellington, and has been Leader of the Council since 1997.

Bracknell Forest Council is a unitary authority consisting of 18 wards and 42 councillors, with a large Conservative majority of 38. It has returned a Conservative majority ever since its establishment as a unitary authority in 1997.

Bracknell has already made its name as a successful tech hub, being home to HP, Dell and Hitachi, and with a projected 15% rise in population by 2039 (one of the highest in the country), the town is currently undergoing a “residential renaissance” in the words of the council’s Chief Executive.

The Grand Exchange is a centrepiece of Bracknell’s regeneration, featuring 181 ‘smart living’ apartments. In addition, a £240 million mixed use scheme was opened in the town centre in 2017, and a further £30 million is to be spent on refurbishing the centre.

The council is currently consulting on its draft Local Plan, and needs to find sites for 3,216 homes. Notable housing proposals include a 4,000-home development on 240 hectares of Green Belt land. In June 2019, the council launched a search to find a partner for a £300 million project to build 700 homes, offices and community facilities. Such is the extent of Bracknell’s growth, Property Reporter recently identified it as a ‘top resi hotspot’.

SP Broadway is delighted to welcome Cllr Bettison to our Politics of Planning roundtable for a discussion on planning and development in Bracknell, and to hear his vision for the borough. We hope you will join us.
