Event description

Description

Following previous appearances with Lady Maisery as part of Coven and the Awake Arise show, the Live at All Hallows team is delighted to welcome back Rowan Rheingans with ’Dispatches on The Red Dress’.

’Dispatches on The Red Dress' is a deeply connecting musical essay, uniquely presented in song, poetry, fiddle music and storytelling by twice-BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner, Rowan Rheingans.

As a testimony to Rowan's reputation as one of the foremost composers and innovators on today's folk scene, this project has been funded by grants from Arts Council England, PRS Women Make Music and the EDFSS.

The show centres around Rowan's German grandmother's stories from her youth in 1940's Germany, using one true story to explore a rich tapestry of themes including: memory, trauma-recovery, waltzes, fascism, history, handicraft, identity, folk-song and bird-song, family and war.

It is at once an urgent and very relevant anti-war piece, which questions our collective handling of 'dark histories' in the present day political climate, as well as an uplifting and poignant celebration of small acts of resistance, transformation, human empathy and hope.

The show includes 10 new songs by Rowan (winner of 'Best Original Track' at the Folk Awards in 2016), with subtle use of live looping and pre-recorded sounds on stage and a special accompanying booklet for every audience member.

'Dispatches on The Red Dress' has been developed with dramaturg Liam Hurley (Karine Polwart's Wind Resistance). The result of this cathartic collaboration is a live show that brings the intimacy and familiarity of a folk gig to meet the more multi-layered textures of innovative theatre. The show is a richly emotional journey for the audience, while it also retains the beautiful simplicity of the best of the folk tradition: just Rowan, her instruments (fiddle, viola, banjos, guitar, voice) and her arresting yet natural and guiding storytelling voice.

Rowan's first solo album, based on the show, is due for release in Autumn 2019, produced by Andy Bell of Hudson Records.
