Description

Royal Economic Society – 2017 Annual Public Lecture – hosted by The University of Manchester

'WHY COMMIT CRIME?” Economic incentives for criminal behaviour' - Professor Stephen Machin (London School of Economics and Political Science)

The Royal Economic Society will be hosting one of the countries’ most inspiring economists, Professor Stephen Machin, to give the next RES Annual Public Lecture this autumn at The University of Manchester on the economics of crime. In this lecture, Stephen Machin, Professor of Economics and Director of the Centre for Economic Performance at London School of Economics, will discuss the importance of economic incentives as a determinant of crime, what economists can contribute to our understanding of why people commit crime and what can be done to discourage, detect and apprehend criminals.

The RES Annual Public Lecture’s purpose is to demonstrate to Yr12 and Yr13 students at Sixth Form Colleges and Schools that the subject of economics is as exciting as ever. In fact, Professor Machin will be delivering new insights with his talk on crime and economic incentives making it relevant to both your AS/A level Economics students, but also to those students specialising in other areas such as Business Studies and Mathematics. A particular emphasis will be placed on drawing on the latest empirical evidence using large-scale micro data and research designs that make it possible to identify causality, Professor Machin will explore the links between education, job opportunities and crime; the economic returns to crime; online crime; and the impact of policing on crime.

So, if you are interested in bringing a group of your students to The University of Manchester for this lecture we want to hear from you!

Travel

Travelling by train we’re located close to both Piccadilly and Oxford Road train stations. The Oxford Road link bus (number 147) runs from Piccadilly right to the centre of campus. Please ask your bus driver to let you off at Whitworth Hall. If you’re travelling to Oxford Road station, go down the station approach to Oxford Road and turn right; Whitworth Hall is 10-15minute walk, or a short bus ride on any Magic Bus marked East Didsbury or West Didsbury (runs very frequently).

Travelling by car – if you’re using SatNav our postcode is M13 9PL. The nearest car park to Whitworth Hall is the Aquatics Centre Car Park on Booth Street. This is the car park marked with the letter B on the campus map above (Booth St East). From here you want to walk out of the road leading into the car park and take a left to go down Booth Street East. Continue walking until you get to the crossroad and take a left to go down Oxford Road. This is the main road running through the University campus. Walk down Oxford Road and Whitworth Hall is the large neo-gothic building on the right.
