For our June meeting, Gordana Johnson will introduce the work of Pentti Sammallahti.

Pentti Sammallahti ( b.1950, Helsinki ) is a leading figure in Finnish art and considered to be one of the great living masters in black and white photography. He has had an enormous influence on a whole generation of Scandinavian documentary photographers.

Sammallahti became a photographer at the age of 11. By the age of 21 he had already exhibited extensively in his homeland and throughout the world. He cherishes the nature and solitude of the North - the silence, the cold, the sea - while making subtle observation of the people, animals and nature he encounters on his travel. His aesthetic choices are influenced by Finnish culture and its aspects of silence, formality, melancholy, solitude and stillness. In this he masterfully captures fleeting moments that radiate with a gentle humour.
