About this event

The London Naturally Group visit Hampstead Heath Pergola and Hill GardensSummary

This month the London Naturally group will visit one of the hidden gems of Hampstead Heath - the Pergola and Hill Gardens. There we will find pillars and arches overgrown with foliage and flowers and also great views out across the Heath.

Details

We will meet in Golders Hill Park for a short walk up to Hampstead Heath's Hill Garden and Pergola. We'll then spend an hour or so enjoying the endlessly photogenic terraces and gardens before walking back to the park.

The pergola was commissioned by Lord Leverhulme, as part of his garden, in the early twentieth century and built by landscape architect Thomas Mawson. It was bought by the City of London in 1989 and is now part of Hampstead Heath.

It's a wonderful place to photograph at any time of year but in early summer its pillars should be overgrown with creepers and the gardens full of a wide variety of flowers and plants, all set against a stunning architectural backdrop.

We will meet outside the cafe in Golders Hill Park, just on the right after you enter the park.

We will return to the park after exploring the Pergola. There are opportunities for post-walk refreshment at the park cafe or the Bull and Bush pub opposite

Directions to the park are here: https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/green-spaces/hampstead-heath/where-to-go-at-hampstead-heath/golders-hill-park

The nearest tube station is Golders Green (Northern Line, Edgware branch). From the station it's a 10-15 minute uphill walk up North End Way to the park. You can avoid the walk by catching the 210 or 268 bus which stop outside the entrance to the park.
