About this event

PHOTOGRAPH “EDGELANDS” - PROJECT FRONTIERS

Sign up and take part in this new RPS-wide project, the objective of which is to create a body of work to represent “edgelands” throughout the UK. Photographers from all parts of the RPS are being asked to do their own mini project on “edgelands” near to where they live.

THE THEME

Edgelands can be defined as the transitional, liminal areas of space to be found on the boundaries of country and town - with the spread of urbanisation, an increasingly important facet of the twenty-first century world.

Your project does not have to be a “rural meets urban” as the definition implies. For example, you may choose to photograph the transition zone between Boroughs, between ‘rich and poor’ housing areas, between brown sites and new developments or, perhaps, areas which have be re-purposed. The choice is yours.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

Each member of the project is invited to submit a body of work comprising five images and a Project Description / Statement of Intent on the subject of ‘Edgelands’. Your submission will be collected by London Region; other Regions and Special Interest Groups are gathering submissions from their Members, and the intention is for them all to be brought together centrally by North Wales Region at the end of the project to create a book (or books), an exhibition (online/gallery), magazine articles, social media, and so on.

This project provides you the opportunity to explore somewhere local to you and to look at and document a part of your immediate environment in new ways.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

Choose a local ‘edgeland’ for your project, prepare a Project Description / Statement of Intent of not more than 100 words, take, and select five images in line with your description / statement and submit them on (or preferably before!) 31st August 2021. We shall collect your images via Dropbox: the link will be sent to those who have registered in their confirmation email.

All genres and styles are welcome. Further information is contained in the FAQs here which you should read before signing up.

WHEN

Photographs to be taken between May 1st and August 31st, 2021 and submitted by midnight on August 31st.

WHO CAN TAKE PART?

All London Region Members and friends of all skill and experience levels. If you are a member of another Region which is not participating, you are welcome to join with us.

TEAMWORK, ADVICE AND GUIDANCE

The topic has been deliberately selected to minimize travel and allow repeated visits to your chosen area, so it is an individual project – but if you like to work with others in your area, please do so. You will each submit individual projects.

To create a sense of Teamwork and to offer Advice and Guidance to anyone who would like to share their ideas, their on-going project or who has concerns about the direction they are taking, we will be arranging holding monthly (regular) “zoom” meetings, for discussion and sharing.

The project is volunteer-led and is free.
