Description

Tomorrow’s Places, Tomorrow’s World?: Developing more Inclusive Placemaking

How can citizens be empowered to participate in how the places they use are shaped and managed? How can all voices be heard? And what can the people working in these fields do to create more inclusive models of placemaking and foster active citizenship?

Placemaking has been defined as ‘the community-driven process by which a physical environment is made meaningful’ (Citiscope)
‘...global policymakers do not lead revolutions — local people do’ (Debra Roberts)

With ‘sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth’, and civic participation forming part of the New Urban Agenda, agreed at the Habitat III Cities conference in 2016, there is a pressing need to think about how these and related global agendas translate into local action here in Scotland. And with the RSA’s Inclusive Growth Commission final report just published, it is important not to lose the momentum.

Join us at this facilitated workshop event which sees RSA Scotland joining forces with the RTPI in Scotland and PAS to debate the issues and think about what action practitioners can take now to take these ideas to a new level.

This event provides a follow-on to RSA-led discussions on Inclusive Growth in 2016. These discussions highlighted the prevention agenda, the need to reach the right audiences and engage young people, and to address the challenge of meaningful measurement of economic growth. This event is led by the Building Inclusive Growth (BIG) Network, the RSA’s Scottish arm of the inclusive growth initiative.

Meanwhile the independent review of the planning system in Scotland has completed a wide-ranging consultation and continues with the development of a Planning Bill to be published by the end of 2017.

Join the exchange of knowledge and ideas to develop tangible actions for inclusive placemaking in Scotland. The event is open to all, and students and young people are particularly welcomed. The RSA is pleased to be associated with the RTPI and PAS for this event and warmly welcomes the support of Anderson Strathern as hosts.
