RSA Salisbury Network: Salisbury Journal
Tue 28 March 2017, 18:30 – 21:00 BST
Join us at March’s RSA Salisbury Network meeting, with guest speaker Bill Browne, Editor of the Salisbury Journal.
The Journal was founded in 1729 and revived by William Collins a few years later to oppose the government of Sir Robert Walpole. This historic and distinguished publication is now part of the Newsquest publishing company and is under the editorship of Bill Browne, who will share his vision of a 21st-century print newspaper shaping its future in a digital age.
Across the world, newsprint companies are looking for ‘convergence’ to underpin their future success. The determined effort by so many to protect the future of print news is increasingly accompanied by efforts to build partnerships with and through other media, including television and online networks. All this raises interesting and important questions concerning the future of local newspapers in our own neck of the world.
One of the biggest challenges facing community leaders in towns such as Salisbury is the increasingly urgent need to build bridges between individuals and groups across our business, public, private, and community sectors. Local government is showing active signs of finding fresh ways of stimulating partnership across local communities. This involves ever more sophisticated grassroots communication to empower local agencies to collaborate in fresh ways.
Digital media will play an increasingly important role in such developments and will become increasingly more prevalent across the community. In such a context, the same digital media will open exciting and challenging opportunities for the engagement of the local press, not only in gathering and sharing information, but also in stimulating the ambitions, ideas, and concerns voiced by local people about what is happening in their communities. Our session aims to offer those present the opportunity to reflect on these issues with the editor of our local newspaper.
