Description

Deliberative Development in Los Angeles

What does it take to design economic development strategies that are complex, equitable, and multi-perspective?

This event is an invitation to local leaders committed to driving deliberative development in Los Angeles to celebrate and share current efforts at development that work through an equity lens and utilize the principles of deliberation.

We'll be hearing from organizations who are leading in this space, and leaders who can share stories of where deliberative development has gone poorly. There will be time at the end to co-create a roadmap for increasing deliberative development through our own spheres of influence. Be prepared to engage with folks from very different perspectives and backgrounds.

Thanks to COLLABORATION TEAM for co-designing this event, and to HOST for hosting this conversation.

Deliberative democracy is a framework for addressing complex issues that are not well-served by the strategy of representative democracy. It is based on the idea that authentic discussion can enable consensual decision-making which has legitimacy and is much less vulnerable to political distortions. It requires many and diverse stakeholders coming together and sharing a range of perspectives on an issue, and has a necessary focus on deep listening. Out of deliberation, complex and adaptive solutions can emerge that are informed by numerous different stakeholders effected by an issue. The RSA has launched a campaign on deliberative democracy, and feels that this is an important equity strategy in the United States, particularly in the realm of economic development.

About the RSA

RSA US is the US branch of the RSA, a hybrid think tank and Fellowship network. The RSA was founded in 1754 with the aim of sparking collaboration between people who are committed to driving social change in their area. Today, it produces research, publications, and digital content; designs experiments in partnership with government, academia, and civic society; and supports a network of almost 30,000 Fellows globally. Our Fellowship is made up of grassroots community organizers, “big idea” thinkers and academics, problem-solvers, tinkerers and inventors, expert facilitators, designers, social entrepreneurs, policy makers, network builders, impact investors and philanthropists, amongst others.

Through our ideas, research and Fellowship, we seek to realize a society where creative power is distributed, where concentrations of power are confronted and where creative values are nurtured. Our purpose is to enable the public, practitioners and policy-makers to realize change.
