The RSC Newcastle and North East Coast Local Section presents

The 8th annual Kilcoyne Christmas Lecture

"A Show of Ice and Fire"

Dr Samantha Tang & Neil Barnes (Nottingham University)

"There’s no smoke without fire.” If you’re a chemist, there’s a way of making a convincing smoke effect without setting anything alight. Some of the best chemical reactions involve blazing heat or extreme cold, and this lecture will demonstrate changes of temperature to full effect with unexpected outcomes! This show of ice and fire reveals the spectacular chemistry behind some everyday phenomena – we’ll show it’s even possible to make an instantaneous cloud indoors. Brace yourselves, Chemistry is coming!

 There will also be some Newcastle University Street Scientists in attendance for the hour before the evening Public Lecture to entertain and amaze the audience with their science busking activities!

Two performances:

Wednesday 13th December at 3.00pm primarily for a block-booked 6th form/schools audience;

Wednesday 13th December at 6.00pm for both schools and the general public.
