Event Details

Advanced machine learning is a rapidly evolving field of research that can have profound positive implications for radiologists and radiology departments in the coming years. In this session, we will discuss how deep learning technologies can support the day-to-day work of radiologists in saving patient lives.

We will examine the organizational benefits and challenges posed by this supportive technology. We will also look at how radiologists can take a leading role in the development and adoption of deep learning in radiology and discuss some of the challenges faced by the industry, including structural changes and operations of professional bodies, individual providers, and nationwide programs.

Speakers

Dr. Sue Astley, Reader in Imaging Science at University of Manchester

Sue is a Reader in the Division of Informatics, Imaging and Data Sciences at the University of Manchester, and a Principal Investigator of the Manchester Breast Centre. Her research is centred on the analysis and interpretation of medical images, in particular the development of methods to enable screening to be adapted to the individual. Her current research interests are: applying deep learning methods to medical image analysis; investigating novel technologies for breast assessment; computer-aided detection; technology assessment; digital pathology; visual search; and breast density analysis. In 2016 she became an honorary member of the Royal College of Radiologists.

Dr. Hugh Harvey, Consultant Radiologist at Guy's and RCR's Radiology Informatics Committee Member

Hugh is a radiologist with a research MD from Europe's leading cancer research institute, the ICR, where he was twice awarded Science Writer of the Year. He spent a year at Babylon Health, a digital health and artificial intelligence start-up, working in clinical artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics, before becoming a consultant in academic radiology with research interests in AI as applied to medical imaging at Guy's and St. Thomas' College London. He also sits on the Radiology Informatics Committee at the Royal College of Radiologists.

Dr Peter Kecskemethy, CEO and co-founder at Kheiron Medical Technologies

Peter comes from a family of doctors (radiologists), which has led him to founding Kheiron. Prior to founding Kheiron, Peter was a post-doctoral researcher and PhD student at the University of Oxford, where he worked on high performance computing (HPC) and computational statistics for genetics. In the past, he has been deeply involved (as CEO, CTO and lead developer) in two tech-intensive healthcare startups and two pure tech startups. One of the healthcare startups was acquired after Peter successfully developed a novel world-class ECG analysis software.

The session will start prompty at 12:30 and will finish at 1:30 and is free to attend. Lunch will be provided.
