Event description

Welcome to the Wild Woods!

Our Forest School will give your child the chance to explore Minsmere and experience nature in a fun and memorable way.

We will spend three hours in the woods following the children’s own curiosity to discover and learn through natural play. There will be no plan set in stone for each session but popular activities might include discovering woodland wildlife, tree climbing, lighting fires, team games and shelter building.

What is Forest School?

Forest School allows children to discover more about themselves and the world around them. We’ll encourage the group to explore their environment, supporting them to be inquisitive, independent and to take risks.

We will learn not only about science and nature, but also a range of creative, life and social skills to help children gain confidence and improve self-esteem. And sometimes it’s important just to play!

What will we be doing?

Sessions will have starting themes and ideas, but activities will be flexible to change with the groups interests. A morning at Forest School might include some of the following:

  • Bushcraft skills
  • Natural art
  • Building shelters
  • Fire lighting
  • Playing with rope and learning knots
  • Nature trails
  • Cooking around the campfire
  • Team games
  • Sensory activities
  • Outdoor free play
  • Discovering wildlife and habitats

All activities are fully risk assessed and supervised appropriately, without limiting the exploration of the group.

What age is it for?

We have two types of age appropriate Forest School sessions. Please ensure you are booking the correct date for your child(ren)

Pioneers (5-9years) – July 26th, August 9th and August 23rd, 2019

Adventurers (7-11years) – August 2nd, August 16th and August 30th, 2019

Each session will be different, so come to one or as many as you like!

Should adults come along?

The woods are a great place for building confidence and learning social skills. With this in mind, we encourage parents and guardians to leave children in the care of the group leaders for the morning.

Adults are welcome to explore the reserve, visit our shop or relax with a cup of tea and cake in our café.

What do we need from you?

We will need a few key details about each child before they attend a session. Please ensure you provide an email address with your booking details, as our Forest School leader Hannah will be in touch before the session. Consent forms need to be filled in and returned to us no later than 24 hours before a session, complete with emergency contact details and any allergies or special requirements.

Where do we meet?

The group meets at the Discovery Centre, ready to start for 10am.

Where do we park?

Minsmere is signposted from the A12 and the village of Westleton (two miles away). On arrival there is a large, free car park.

What do we need to bring?

Children should wear outdoor clothing, with sturdy footwear (boots and trainers, rather than wellies – particularly for tree climbing). Long sleeves, trousers and insect repellent are recommended to avoid getting itchy bites. Waterproofs or a sunhat and sun cream may also be recommended – make sure to check the forecast!

A morning drink and snack will be provided, but children may wish to bring along a water bottle. No phones or tablets please – this is a tech-free zone!

Are there toilets?

There are toilets at the Discovery Centre, but not in the woods. We will advise all children to go before we set off.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Email hannah.jones@rspb.org.uk or call us on 01728 648281 for further details. All bookings must be made online.

What's the refund policy?

Customers can cancel up to a week in advance by contacting the site team and a full refund will be issued. Up to 24 hours before the event a 50% refund will be given.

Events will go ahead if it is raining, however, RSPB reserve the right to cancel in severe weather conditions and will offer a full refund to customer’s if the event does not go ahead.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, simply turn up to the Discovery Centre and we will tick you off the list.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

You can transfer your booking to another Forest School session up to 24 hours before the event.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes, just let us know which child(ren) you have booked for.
