About this event

Join us for a workshop learning the fundamentals of rug making, as well as essential weaving techniques. You will be learning this unique craft in an intimate setting, with hands-on guidance from British-Afghan artist Ghafar Tajmohammad, who previously delivered workshops at the British Library and Tate Modern.

Attendees will get to design and weave their own mini rug, focusing on the traditional hand-knotting technique of the Turkish knot. You will gain familiarity with the tools used in this craft, and by the end of the workshop, have a mini unfinished rug with enough knowledge to continue weaving at home.

Over the course of the workshop, Ghafar will teach you how to set up your loom, design your own rug and weave it yourself, with plenty of support and advice along the way. If you finish the weaving in time, you’ll cut your rug off the loom and finish the loose ends.

This workshop is best suited for beginners.

arrived in Afghanistan expecting to find the country they were so used to seeing on the news: arid landscapes, soldier lined streets, extreme poverty. And while this is part of what they came to know, their experience was much more shaped by encounters with Afghanistan’s extraordinary craftsmanship, ancient heritage and outstanding natural beauty.

After living and working there for 3 years, they returned to set up ISHKAR in London, providing a platform for luxury artisanal products,

Through ISHKAR's curated collection of pieces they provide a window onto countries known for their rich culture long before they were known for war.
