LEAD Sport

Leadership, Employabilty and development in Sport for young People in Perth & Kinross.

All our leadership courses are supported by the Gannochy Trust and provide Perth and Kinross Council school pupils with the opportunity to earn introductory sports coaching and leadership qualifications. This is an excellent way to develop communication and leadership skills, build confidence, gain recognised qualifications, and acquire experience in sports coaching.

As part of the project, you are required to volunteer for at least 25 hours in a school or community club setting. (If you are an Aspiring Coach, this is not an additional requirement.) Your Active Schools Coordinator, who is based at your school, can assist you in finding a local placement. These volunteer hours can also be counted towards other awards, such as the Saltire Award and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Please note the following terms and conditions:

  • The course is run by the Active Schools team - school staff are not present.
  • It is your responsibility to arrange travel arrangements to and from the venue.
  • Courses may involve work before, during and after the course which must be completed in order to gain the qualification.
  • The course is supported by Perth and Kinross Education Services and is only available to pupils, staff and volunteers from Perth and Kinross council schools.
  • If you have additional support needs, please let us know.
  • You will receive an email notification through our Eventbrite registration process of your confirmed place on the course.
  • You must inform the organiser if you are unable to attend the course at least one week before (where possible). If you fail to attend without informing the organiser you will be charged the full value of the course (if applied) and no refunds can be provided.

LEAD Sport

Leadership, Employability & Development in Sport for PKC Pupils

We recognise that our young people make a valuable contribution as leaders in sport. Our LEAD Sport pathway provides leadership, employability and development opportunities in sports for our young people in Perth and Kinross. Our programmes are designed to help young people to develop confidence in their abilities, transferrable core skills, and leadership skills. They will have the opportunity to increase their educational attainment and boost their CV. We are committed to reducing inequalities and places will be prioritised to pupils living in SIMD 1 & 2, Young Carers, Looked After Children, those with an assessed disability or ASN and teenage girls.

We provide a range of programmes for PKC pupils involved in sports that help them to achieve nationally recognised qualifications and experiences in schools, clubs, and/or Live Active settings to help them develop.

  • Getting Started - a variety of leadership courses during the school holidays and inset days.
  • Aspiring Coaches - A three-day interactive conference during the curriculum in June to give S4-S6 pupils the opportunities to gain generic leadership skills and knowledge. On completion of volunteering hours, pupils progress to their Governing Body’s coaching pathway. This is our flagship programme that is fully funded.
  • Activate - Providing opportunities in sports leadership and work experience for S4-S6 pupils who attend school during the exam diet.
  • Young Ambassadors - Each year two pupils from each secondary school in P&K are selected to promote sport, and motivate and inspire other young people to get involved in sport.

We also have modern apprenticeships in a variety of schools across P&K and with our sports development team. Recruitment for these posts is often in March and June each year.
