Rule of Three refers to the principle of asymmetry, or groupings of three feeling more complete, satisfying, memorable and balanced. It is the smallest number required to create a pattern and rhythm. From ancient stories about genies granting three wishes, to tales of the three Magi, and children’s stories such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the rule of three has been a mainstay in many kinds of storytelling since primeval times.

As three artists, with their own stories, cultural backgrounds and individual ways of working - through varied processes, materials and ideas - the title The Rule of Three seemed appropriate and also aspirational. Our first three person exhibition shows our work together in dialogue, a three way conversation to create new connections, meanings and shared stories.

The exhibition brings together abstract painters - Beatrice Nespega, Esther Sample, and Neha Nandedkar; three creative voices and approaches that contribute to a shared rhythm.

Beatrice Nespega. Bea’s work is all about freedom, play, and creative flow. Painting with acrylics and mixed media, Bea embraces experimentation, layering of texture, colour, and varied mark-making methods to spark her creative imagination and spontaneity.

Esther Sample approaches her painting to amplify light and textures found in the urban environment. Layers of mark-making on paper, built up and scraped away, form a vital part of her artistic language.

Neha Nandedkar explores movement, memory, and a sense of place through bold strokes, layered textures, and intuitive mark-making. Her practice is deeply tactile, engaging with mixed media across diverse materials. She continues to evolve her distinctive visual language by also integrating abstraction into her ceramic works.
