About this event

  • 2 hours

At the age of sixty, and having lived with Parkinson’s disease for over ten years, Guy Deacon CBE set out on one last adventure: to drive solo from his home in the UK 18,000 miles and through twenty-five countries to Cape Town on the southern tip of Africa. This incredible journey, across Europe and down the full length of Africa, took the former British Army officer over twelve months. Along the way, he broke down nineteen times, underwent one emergency evacuation, and took 3,650 prescription pills.

'This perilous journey would be a huge undertaking for anyone, but for someone living with Parkinson's it is a remarkable challenge'. Professor Roger A Barker, head of clinical neuroscience, University of Cambridge.

Guy will be discussing his new book Running on Empty in conversation with renowned writer and historian Alistair Moffat. The evening will take the form of a question and answer session with Guy sharing photos, video and anecdotes about his adventure and mission to raise awareness of Parkinson's.

The ticket includes a welcome drink on arrival at Duns Castle and Mainstreet Trading Company will be on hand to sell copies of Guy's book. All proceeds from the book tour and sales will be distributed between Parkinson's charites via The Deacon Foundation.
