Event description

Description

The TrailFest RunSOCIAL ON Tour Programme continues in February with some great trail and hill options starting from the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre.

There are 3 route options with varied start times:

Greenock Cut x Dunrod Hill (10am and 2pm)

  • Dist: 13.5km
  • Ascent: 210m
  • For: Those who are comfortable with 10km on trail and are looking to gain more experience running on hill tracks, steep descents etc. Seasoned trailrunners looking for a new route,
  • Pace: Approx 9-10min/mile over the route with plenty stops to re-group and chat

Starting at the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre we'll head clockwise round the Greenock Cut Trail. This is on hard-packed, level trails and is virtually flat for the first 8km and offers stunning views over the Firth of Clyde and the Arrochar Alps. We then head uphill on a wide gravel road before venturing onto rough, boggy hill tracks for the final 4km. Taking in three tops, including a trig point and Dunrod Hill, we'll take on a steep, semi-technical descent back down to the Vistor Centre, where coffee awaits.

This route offers a clear mix of terrain and trail. The flat trails on the Greenock Cut are hard packed, the hill tracks are VERY wet and boggy and the hills represent a significant challenge on legs that have already travelled 8km.

Greenock Cut (10am and 2pm)

  • Dist: 12km
  • Ascent: 100m
  • For: Those looking to step up from 5km on trail, but not ready for hill tracks and steep descents. Those looking for a relatiely flat trailrun.
  • Pace: Approx. 10min/mile with plenty stops to re-group and chat

Starting at the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre we'll head clockwise round the Greenock Cut Trail. This is on hard-packed, level trails and is virtually flat for the first 8km and offers stunning views over the Firth of Clyde and the Arrochar Alps. We then head uphill on a wide gravel road which then turns into a paved road, known as The Waterman's Road, for an easy, coasting descent back to the Vistor Centre, where coffee awaits.

This route offers a straightforward run, albeit with a significant hill to climb after 8km. The route is entirely on hard-packed trails and gravel/Tarmac road.

Dunrod Hill Loop (12.30pm)

  • Dist: 6.5km
  • Ascent: 200m
  • For: Those new to running off-road over wet, boggy and steep ground. Those wanting to improve their skills over rough hill tracks and steep descents.
  • Pace:Approx. 10-12min/mile with plenty stops to re-group and chat

Starting at the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre we'll head North-East on The Waterman's Road, reaching the high point before veering off onto rough, boggy hill tracks. Taking in three tops, including a trig point and Dunrod Hill, we'll take on some steep and semi-technical descents back down to the Vistor Centre, where coffee awaits.

While this route is shorter, it should not be underestimated. Upon leaving the Waterman's Road the ground quickly becomes sodden and hilly, slowing progress significantly. The climbs can be hard-going due to the lack of decent trail and the descents are steep in places, so offer a good opportunity to gain confidence descending. This route packs a punch in a short space!

Capacity is limited on all runs, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Profile of the full Greenock Cut x Dunrod Hill route. The Dunrod Hill Loop is essentially just the hilly bit, the Greenock Cut Trail contains only the first hill and is otherwise flat/downhill.

Greenock Cut x Dunrod Hill route profile

Runners are required to carry the kit, food and water appropriate for this run. We strongly advise carrying a survival bag, waterproof coat, water and spare food as well as hat and glove to suit the conditions on the day. Trailrunning shoes are ESSENTIAL for those doing the Greenock Cut x Dunrod Hill and the Dunrod Hill Loop runs. All attendees will be emailed in the week prior to the run to cover essential and suggested kit as well as weather conditions. If you've any queries in the meantime, do get in touch with us.

Note: The singletrack road from Greenock to the Visitor Centre is badly potholed in parts. Be careful when driving to and from the start point.

Finally, please note that all of our runs are for adult runners only: no under 18s and no dogs, please.

(We reserve the right to amend the route at any time to take into account adverse weather conditions etc.)
