Event description

Description

The Whangie X John Muir Way 12 (10am and 2pm starts)

12km with over 280m of ascent.

Route: Starting at Edenmill Farm we'll follow the John Muir Way (JMW) on paved roads past pine tree plantations for approx. 2.5km before joining winding and undulating hard-packed trails round Burncrooks Reservoir. After circumnavigating the reservoir we'll strike onto a hill path (steep, uneven and boggy when wet, or icy when cold) leading us up to The Whangie.

Crossing a deer fence by a style, we'll venture into the canyon of The Whangie to marvel at this amazing natural feature before re-appearing on the north side of the rocks to be presented with a huge vista, which is a feast for the eyes (hopefully the weather lets us see the view). Note: there is a very small section of easy scrambling to get into The main crack of The Whangie from the south. Help will be on hand should you need it.

After escaping the clutches of The Whangie we'll contour round the north side of the hill before striking back in a south westerly direction to summit at the trig point atop Auchineden. Once selifes have been snapped, this turns into a delightful descent on undulating and , at times, steep, narrow hill path which will either be boggy or icy in parts, before we return to Edenmill on the paved road for the final 2km. (note: sadly there's no post-run coffee option as Edenmill Farm Shop is being refurbished at the time of this run).

Route profile:

Route Profile

Pace: 9-9:30/mile = move time of approx. 1hr15mins

This run is aimed at:

  • those who would be comfortable running at a steady pace for up to 2 hours on trails, rough ground and up hills

  • those who are confident to run this route in approx. 1hr30mins

  • those who are confident to be running on trails, over rough ground and up hills - or feel ready to try

  • those who would like to explore new areas

  • For those who have ran with us before on our RunSOCIALs at Mugdock: this represents a signifiacnt challenge compared to our Mugdock 10km in terms of distance, terrain, use of hill tracks, distance from 'civilisation', exposure to the elements etc. If you find our Mugdock 10km runs no longer stretch your abilities, then you're ready for The Whangie X JMW 12. If you find our Mugdock 10km runs require significant effort, then try The Whangie X JMW 8.

The Whangie X John Muir Way 8 (10am start)

8km with over 180m of ascent.

Route: The same as above, except cutting out the loop round Burncrooks Reservoir.

Starting at Edenmill Farm we'll follow the John Muir Way on paved roads past pine tree plantations for approx. 2.5km before striking onto a hill path leading us up to The Whangie. Help will be on hand should you need it, but there is also a path round the side if you don't fancy it.

After escaping the clutches of The Whangie we'll contour round the north side of the hill before striking back in a south westerly direction to summit at the trig point atop Auchineden. Once selifes have been snapped, this turns into a delightful descent on undulating and, at times, steep, narrow hill path which will either be boggy or icy in parts, before we return to Edenmill on the pavced road for the final 2km. Pace: 11-12min/mile = move time of approx. 1hr

This run is aimed at:

  • those who would be comfortable running at a steady pace for up to 2 hours on trails, rough ground and up hills

  • those who are confident to run this route in approx. 1hr30mins

  • those who are ready to try running over rough ground and up hills

  • those who would like to explore new areas

  • For those who have ran with us before on our RunSOCIALs at Mugdock: this represents a signifiacnt challenge compared to our Mugdock 5km in terms of distance, terrain, use of hill tracks, distance from 'civilisation', exposure to the elements etc. If you find our Mugdock 5km runs no longer stretch your abilities, then you may be ready for The Whangie X JMW 8. If you find our Mugdock 5km runs require significant effort, then keep working at it and we'll see you on a RunSOCIAL ON TOUR soon.

Capacity on both runs is limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Runners are required to carry the kit, food and water appropriate for this run. We strongly advise carrying a survival bag, waterproof coat, water and spare food as well as hat and gloves to suit the conditions on the day.

Full details prior to the run will be emailed out to all attendees. If you have any queries or concerns, contact us at: rundirty@trailfestscotland.com

Finally, please note that all of our runs are for adult runners only: no under 18s and no dogs, please.
