TrailFest have teamed up with Gary Tompsett of Adventure Buddy (plus speaker and navigation session leader at TrailFest2) to offer a Navigational Course (inc. a free hot drink) designed to cater for trail runners who are venturing a little further from what they see as their usual safe furrow.
The aim of this Navigation Day is to make you more comfortable and more capable with a map (and compass) in hand (or in GPS device) when on remote hills and to keep a track of your progress on regular trails.
The format of the Day will be:
- 10am start. Meet at the Visitor Centre at Mugdock Country Park
- 1230-1pm short lunch break *FREE HOT DRINK INCLUDED IN TICKET PRICE*
- 3pm finish.
The Daystarts at 10am with immediate immersion in the outdoors, for technique introduction, practised under tread and at short stops.
The Day concludes at 3pm, and with a short break in the middle of day with a FREE hot drink.
Techniques include; Map orientation and setting, Map READING (like a book) Compass work, Map AND Compass (united) work, Grid work, Distance and Scale, but most fundamentally, a very active technique called 'Collecting Features'.
The course does not attempt to teach Grid References as this takes much practise. Instead, we suggest you watch and practise this > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXuo_ocVMVU
Although some of what we will cover will be ‘textbook’ stuff, you will find that Gary will bring in the more ‘mindful’ elements. This, along with various anecdotes, will enable us to play out a few scenarios to make the day even more meaningful! Also, be sure to observe and listen to others in the group. Their experiences and challenges will mean a great deal. For this reason we will sometimes split into smaller groups to facilitate easier discussions.
We will provide sections of mapping at different scales to facilitate discussion of 1:50 000 vs 1:25 000 vs other maps (e.g. Harvey’s Maps – 1:40 000) and GPS incorporation into navigation, or indeed, as the only tool.
Full skill acquisition cannot be achieved in just one day, but it will give you a start, and an idea of what is possible, and what techniques to try with friends, and ultimately, on your own.
Gary Tompsett’s background is in various competitive navigational environments, often on open hillsides, mountains and in poor weather. This has driven him to learn and develop techniques that are robust and repeatable. Two-day Mountain Marathons have been an excellent training ground for him, with several category and overall wins over the years, and up to and including 2016.

What's the refund policy?
Weather: The Navigation Course will go ahead in all weathers unless the organisers deem there to be a threat to individual safety or the weather has severely impacted transport links to the venue (i.e. snow has blocked access to Mugdock Country Park and caused havoc on the trains). We will monitor the weather and make any anouncements if required.
Should we have to postpone the event due to weather we will re-schedule for another date and your tickets will remain valid. If you can't make the new date we will honour a full refund.
Can't make it? If you can't make it we need to know as soon as possible. We don't much like being officious, but we need to ensure we can cover our costs.
Therefore, we must ask that you notify us NO LATER than midnight 01/01/2017 if you can't come. If you do, we will provide a full refund.
If you notify us between 02/01/2017 and midnight 04/01/2017 we will only be able to refund 50% of your ticket fee, minus admin costs. Should you notify us after midnight 04 01 2017 will not be able to refun any monies.
However, you can avoid all of that if you can find a willing replacement. If you do, please inform us of the updated details.
