Description

This one-day workshop training event will support rural museums and heritage sites take a close look at the challenges and opportunities of becoming or developing commercial activity, specific to their organisation and rural location, with a strong diagnostic approach.

The workshop is hosted by the University of Dundee Museum Services and is open to anyone working or volunteering in a museum or heritage organisation where there has been thinking and discussion about needing to become income generating or improving and increasing income generation streams and activities. Participants will be asked to complete a short pre-course questionnaire to make sure the content on the day is as relevant as possible.

The outcomes from the session will include:

  1. A framework ‘Developing Income Generation’ Action Plan for your organisation
  2. Exploring the creative commercial of collections and sites.
  3. Greater awareness of opportunities to work collaboratively within the sector and/or the region to support income generation activities.
  4. Greater understanding of sources and resources that can help access advice, funding and marketing / promotional activities.

The facilitator for this session will be Ruthanne Baxter. Ruthanne, currently Museums Services Manager for the University of Edinburgh, has over 15 years’ experience developing income generation activities in heritage settings in both rural and city locations.

Ruthanne is regularly invited to deliver presentations at industry conferences and events – recent presentations have included Oxford Inspires Conference– ‘Building Capacity: Heritage Resilience’ and the Association of Independent Museums Conference, ‘Welcoming a World of Visitors: Developing International Visitors and Travel Trade at Heritage Sites’.

In 2016 Ruthanne was selected as a finalist for the prestigious, Visit Scotland Thistle Awards, Regional Ambassador Award, recognising individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to tourism in Scotland.

In her spare time Ruthanne is, currently, organising the ‘Aberlady All Eras’ Weekend, working with Haddington Agricultural Show 2018 on the Year of Young People and an active member of the Scotland’s Churches Trust Committee
