Event description

Satterthwaite Bloomery was a charcoal-fired furnace likely to be of Medieval date. Charcoal found nearby dates back to 1280 – 1410. We are looking for volunteers to join our archaeologists and their team from Liverpool University to carry out a geophysical survey and excavation to find out more about early iron smelting processes.

The excavation will take place daily Monday to Friday over the 5 weeks.

Schedule for each day:

9.30 Meet at Blind Lane Forestry Commission Car Park (grid reference SD343 912) see below for directions

9.40 Travel by minibus to site

16.30 Return to car park

What to expect:

  • You will be given training and guidance

  • You will be kept fairly busy with tasks as we have a lot to do!

  • You won’t be asked to do anything that you don’t feel happy doing

  • Tasks might involve surveying the site, using equipment and tools, planning, recording information, digging and drawing

  • There will be a first aider on site at all times

  • We will be having a celebration event at the end of the excavation

What to bring:

Be prepared to be outside all day in any Lake District weather conditions – as you will know it can be very changeable! Warm and waterproof clothing and sun cream and hats as well as sturdy boots are essential.

There is a small welfare unit on site with a loo and tea and coffee making facilities.

Please bring your own lunch.

Getting there:

Due to the lack of parking and local forestry work taking place at Grizedale transport to the site will be provided. Please meet each morning at the Blind Lane Forestry Commission car park at 09.30 where you will be met by one of the team in a minibus.

Travelling from Kendal to Barrow on the A590, take the right turn (B5278) at Haverthwaite signposted to Grizedale and Rusland. Turn right at the T junction and follow the road through the Rusland Valley towards Grizedale. The car park is on the right hand site before you reach the junction at Force Mills.

In case of bad weather:

If the weather is predicted to be very bad and a day has to be called off, you will be notified by 8pm the day before. Please ensure that you provide a telephone number we can contact you on when you book your place.

If you have any queries, questions or need to cancel at the last minute then please contact Rob Philpott on 07805 161434.

Please note that this is a free event but booking is essential.

And finally…

We hope that you enjoy your time volunteering with the archaeology team and Look forward to seeing you at Grizedale.
