Description

Ruth Beale: Doing Things Together
Wednesday Sessions
Wednesday 27 March, 5pm - 6pm

Ruth Beale will speak about her artwork and ongoing commission at Mansions of the Future. Framed by the idea of ‘Doing Things Together’, she will talk about her collaborative art practice, and the different ways she works collaboratively and collectively. Using an approach she calls ‘socialised questioning’ her work includes performance, writing, collecting, drawing and socially-engaged processes to consider the evocative relationships between culture, governance, social discourse and representation.

For her Mansions of the Future commission, Ruth has been inspired by distinction of the freeman and unfree man in the Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest. She has been asking the people of Lincoln ‘what does freedom mean to you?’, and her event series Freedom: Public Conversations is exploring different discourse around freedom, from prison reform, to freedom of movement and freedom of speech.

Part of Wednesday Sessions, a 6-month programme of talks curated by Mansions of the Future. The Wednesday Sessions will highlight artistic practices which are based on collaborative and collective processes, where art is actively and critically engaged with its immediate context. This series focuses on models of working which suggest new connections and ecologies between artists and non-artists, humans and nature, the individual and the collective, and modes of operation often stemming from feminist practices
