Event description
Just us for a weekend of yoga, walks and vegetarian food in one of the most incredible and unspoilt locations in the Lake District.

About this Event

Join us for a wonderful weekend of yoga, walks, great food and a writing workshop suitable for everyone in the run up to Christmas 2020.

High above Ambleside, this magical retreat will take place over 3 days at Yewfield, a Victorian hotel and complex of cottages which backs onto Tarn Hows. Heating and hot water is supplied by a biomass wood chip boiler (fuelled by trees 'thinned' from their own land) and the fully vegetarian hotel includes a state of the art, wood-burner-heated yoga studio complete with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, surrounded by 80 acres of private land. Views of Lakes Windermere and Coniston lie to the front, while the remarkable Tarn Hows (pictured) is 15 mins walk to the rear. Enjoy a genuine weekend break before the Christmas rush in one of the UK's most breathtaking holiday destinations.

Lead yoga instructor is Sophie Rae Martyn who will run four classes over the weekend. The classes will be carefully planned to suit everyone, a morning energising practice and a lovely yin and restorative in the evening. Manchester-based yoga teacher, Sophie-Rae Martyn teaches at One Yoga in Chorlton, Yoga Soul and The Life Centre on Deansgate.

She has studied Jivamukti Yoga, Mandala Vinyasa, Yin and Rocket. Her teaching style is embodied and intuitive whilst being challenging and playful at the same time. Sophie-Rae accommodates everyone in the room practicing and allows people to meet themselves, exactly where they are on the mat.

Her classes are a place where we explore what lies within and we practice compassionately. She hopes to inspire you to do whatever it is that makes you feel truly connected to yourself and to live a happy and contented life, whatever the rollercoaster brings.

There will also be writing workshop on Saturday morning with Ruth (former editor of The Metro in Manchester, the most recent Time Out Manchester guide book, founder of the what's on website, Manchester Wire with bylines in Telegraph, Guardian, MEN, and more) plus a guided walk on Saturday afternoon around Tarn Hows. There will be plenty of opportunities to explore the area on your own too.

Accommodation & food

Accommodation is in 4* hotel rooms for 2 or 3 people (single supplement available), some of which have 4 poster beds and all of which have ensuite bathrooms. Vegetarian food will be cooked and served by the in-house team (who also run acclaimed veggie restaurants, Zeffirellis and Fellinis in Ambleside) with vegan options available.

Meals provided will be Friday evening, breakfast and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Sandwiches will be provided for lunch on both days as well as a cream tea on Saturday. Total cost is £350 per person for a standard room or £390 for a superior room ( (sharing with 1 or 2 others). Single room £420. 9 places are available in total. The balance must be paid directly to Ruth in full 28 days in advance.

Optional extras

These include Sunday lunch at Top 50 Gastropub, The Drunken Duck which is 5 minutes drive from Yewfield, and horse riding suitable for beginner or competent riders on Sunday afternoon. Booking essential for the horse riding - contact Ruth (ruth@manchesterwire.co.uk) to find out more.

Traveling to and from Yewfield

There is plenty of parking on site, and the venue is around 1.5hrs from Manchester by car. Train travel is also available - the closest station is Windermere and the venue is a 20 minute taxi ride from the station.

More about Sophie Rae Martyn (pictured below)

Like most people, Sophie-Rae found yoga at a time when she needed it most. Having practiced on and off for many years, Sophie-Rae really fell in love with the practice when she started Jivamukti Yoga and found that it's spiritual teachings, along with dynamic vinyasa, moved Sophie-Rae towards a deeper sense of self.

Sophie-rae is also a trained massage and wellness therapist and has worked in bodywork for 15 years. She adores being in nature, the simple things in life, like a coffee in the morning and watching the sunrise with her dogs.
