Event Details

This one-day Royal Yachting Association course covers all the usual first aid subjects, including Basic Life Support (BLS) and treatment minor injuries and clinical shock, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat for work or pleasure, on inland waters, rivers and estuaries or at sea in categorised waters up to 60 nautical miles from safe haven.

First Aid - Basic Life Support

In a medical emergency a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations where access to regular emergency services is limited or unavailable. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using yachts, workboats, fishing vessels and small commercial craft.

There is no minimum pre-course experience or assumed knowledge, but please note students must be physically able to kneel on the floor and carry out Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Course Content

The syllabus is based on the recommendations of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and fulfils the requirements for:

  • professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven, including Boatmasters and those wishing to have their RYA Certificates of Competence commercially endorsed
  • the Senior First Aid certificate needed by offshore racers subject to ISAF's regulations on first aid training (OSR 4.08.4)
  • Training and Certification Requirements for the Crew of Fishing Vessels (MGN 411) and may be used when applying to the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish) for a fishermen's photo identification card to verify compliance.

The subjects specific to boating include:

  • the recovery position in a confined space
  • CPR, including the drowning protocol
  • cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
  • seasickness and dehydration
  • medical assistance or advice by marine VHF radio
  • helicopter rescue

The course is taught using resuscitation manikins and a variety of other materials usually found in a typical  first aid kit.

Included in the course fee is the latest edition of the official First Aid Manual published in association with the UK's three leading First Aid providers, St John's Ambulance, St Andrew's Ambulance Association and the British Red Cross.
