RYA Powerboat Advanced
Overview
This course is:
For experienced or professional powerboat users: Candidates should have a high level of boat handling skills, navigation knowledge up to the Coastal / Yachtmaster level. A valid first aid certificate and a short range VHF operators Licence are essential for sitting this course. Candidates will learn skills such as – night time navigation, , IRPCS lights, tidal heights, advanced boat handling and more.
If you are using this qualification in a commercial environment then a competency exam will be required in addition to the Advanced Powerboat ticket. For commercial exams further training tickets and a minimum amount of sea time will be required – please check the current legislation regarding sea time, or contact the UHI Shetland RYA department.
Course times 0900-1700 plus night passages. You will be required to bring boots and wet weather clothing (oilskins) for the duration of the course. You will also be required to bring with you pencils, sharpener, eraser, A4 paper, compass and scientific calculator. All of these items are on sale at the Shetland UHI Scalloway Campus.
This course is for the more experienced powerboat users, and in order to attend you must have a valid first aid certificate and VHF operator's licence.
For Commercial customers please note that minimum sea time and training requirements must be met in order to sit your commercial exam (As a guide 30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours). Please note that exam fees must be paid in person to the examiner at the time of the exam and fees are set by the RYA.
