Event description
RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course - Join us to learn to drive a powerboat, get qualified & perhaps apply for your ICC (International Certificate)

About this Event

Please note we have currently stopped ticket sales for our face to face events until May in light of the current Covid 19 situation. We are still operating but on an online basis. We are also instigating new approaches to training which may be of interest. This is a rapidly changing situation so please drop us an email to discuss the availability & current situation for future courses later in the season. By contacting us directly it allows us to be flexible with refunds and cancellations at the moment.

Join us on our course and learn how to handle a powerboat. Suitable for beginners and those who have been boating for a while and often referred to as the boating 'license'. You do not need any special kit and all equipment will be provided. You can also potentially apply for your International Certificate at the end of the course if you plan to boat abroad. Upon successful completion you will be capable of taking a boat out on your own.

Whether you are looking to increase boating skills or looking for a a couple of days learning a new skill with a friend or family member we'd love to welcome you to our course.

We have listed a few common queries below but please do not hesitate to contact us or check out our website for further information and additional dates Dorset Marine Training PB2 Course

When do the courses run? How do I find out course dates?

You can book the date specified above or we can run the course on a date to suit you, our client. We can run courses seven days a week so if you want to book a course with a friend or family member just contact us with your preferred dates and we will do our best to accommodate you. We operate all year.

What if I want to book just one place?

This event is for a one person booking and you may be placed on a course with other students (max ration 3 students to 1 boat/Instructor)

Alternatively contact us to benefit from discounts if you'd like to book one to one tuition or book the course with friends as we will allocate the boat to just your group. It is a lovely way to spend time with a partner, friend or family.

Prices: £325pp for one space, £575 for two spaces (equiv-£285pp), £750 for three spaces (equiv £250pp)

What if only one person books on?

We do not cancel courses for lack of bookings and occasionally you might find yourself on a one to one course. That is fine by us!

Do I need my own boat? What if I already have a boat?

This booking is to take the course on our boat. If you have your own then contact us to book a bespoke date. If taking the course on your own boat then we can train at a location suitable for you and up to three people can be trained at a time. If you don’t have a boat then book this slot or visit our website and you will train on our boat. Usually this is a RIB but other boats can be arranged.

Who is this course suitable for?

This course will suit both complete beginners if confident and those with some experience on the water but who wish to develop skills or obtain a qualification. The course can be taken by those aged 12 and over but they must be mature enough to understand the full syllabus including the theory. Please note under 18's must book on a youngsters course and not on a course designated for adults unless booking on a course with an over 18 family member. We do not allow youngsters on practical courses with adults that they do not know. Alternatively, the Level 1 course has less theory and may be more suited to those who are nervous or unsure. If in doubt about suitability please call us to chat.

How many people will be on the course with me?

Our usual courses run for just two people who book together and there is often just one course running at a time which means we can give you our full attention. If you have booked an individual place via this event then there may be other students on the course with you - the max permitted ratio is 3 students to 1 instructor. You can of course book a private course for one to one tuition.

Can I obtain an ICC or International ‘License’ via this course?

Yes this RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course does allow you to apply for an ICC. In the UK this is administered via the RYA and you should ensure you meet their eligibility requirements listed here – http://www.rya.org.uk/knowledge-advice/boating-abroad/icc/Pages/hub.aspx . We are happy to assist with the application at the end of your course if needed.

What if the weather is bad?

We are very lucky with the area in which we operate that we can usually find a protected part of the harbour to train. In the rare event of inclement weather, we will contact you to discuss. We can either postpone the training or issue a refund if the training has not yet started.

What if I need to cancel?

Our full cancellation terms are given in our terms and conditions attached to the enquiry email we send out. Please be assured that we understand that circumstances do occasionally change and we will do our best to work with you to rearrange training if necessary. It is usually best to change to an alternative ate as sadly the Eventbrite charges cannot be refunded.

Who will be teaching me?

The Chief Instructor or Principal will normally teach the course. You can therefore be assured that you will receive enthusiastic instruction from an Instructor who is keen to ensure you achieve the most from your training. We may occasionally use another carefully selected trusted Instructor but we do not send courses out to freelancers that we do not know well.

Where does the course take place?

We operate from the Port of Poole Marina. This allows us to get out in the harbour and to our training ground very quickly. It also means we have easy access to facilities for food stops!

How do I know what to expect from the course/what to bring etc

Being prepared means you get the most from the course. We plan our courses carefully and you will be a sent an email containing full joining instructions. If you have any questions at any time we always encourage you to contact us as we are happy to chat through any queries.

What boat will I use?

One of our own ribs is usually used for the course. These boats are very capable craft, whilst not being intimidating in size.

Do I need any special equipment?

No, we will provide everything. We have lifejackets for all and waterproofs in sizes M, L & XL.

Where can I find out information about the course from an independent source?
