Event description

This year’s RYA Push the Boat Out is your chance to try sailing in the relaxed and friendly environment of Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club.

Sign up here to one of our free sailing sessions. We'll be operating from our boatyard on Portobello Promenade (next to the Beach House cafe). Participants will have the opportunity to buddy up with one of our experienced sailors for a sail in one of our club boats.

Each session will consist of a 30 minute prep session, followed by 1 hour on the water and a short debrief. We'll also have the BBQ going in the yard.

Numbers are limited for each time slot but if no slots are available at your preferred time please email and we'll add you to our waiting list.

For more info see our FAQ section. Please also note that the event is weather dependent.

RYA Push the Boat Out is a national event which sees hundreds of sailing clubs all over the UK offer the opportunity to try sailing. No previous sailing experience is necessary.

Are there any age restrictions on the event?

The event is open to anyone over the age of 10. Under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult (although the adult doesn't need to participate in the sailing).

What do I need to bring with me to the event?

We can't provide wetsuits, so if you have your own please feel free to bring it. Otherwise please bring warm comfortable cloths you don't mind getting wet. Remember that it is colder on the water than on land so bring more cloths than you think you'll need.

We will provide buoyancy aids to all participants.

Please also bring a dry change of cloths to change into after the event if you get wet.

What will happen on the day?

Please arrive at the boatyard a few minutes before your session starts. PSKC members will be there to meet you and take you through the preparation for your sail. The preparation session will last around 30 minutes and will cover what to expect from your session including the basics of sailing and safety on the water.

What facilities are available at PKSC?

Please note that PKSC does not have dedicated changing or toilet facilities in the yard. We are hoping to arrange the use of changing facilities at the nearby Swimming Pool and will confirm this nearer the event. We do have a large shed which can be used to change in/out of your sailing cloths. Toilets will be available at the Beach House cafe next door.

What happens if I fall in?

Our ridged inflatable rescue boat will be on the water for the whole session and will be on hand the assist if anything goes wrong.

What happens if the weather is too bad to sail?

The weather can be the most unpredictable part of sailing. If the forecast for the day looks too bad to go sailing and we need to cancel the event we'll aim to let you know in advance. If the weather deteriorates during the session our safety officers may decide to postpone or cancel sailing.

If this happens we'll try and arrange another time for participants to try sailing at one of our regular club days.

Who will I be sailing with?

You'll be paired up with one of our members who will be volunteering to take participants onto the water.

How accessible is the event?

The sailing sessions will require a good general level of fitness and mobility. We'll be launching and returning boats from the beach and participants should be comfortable jumping in and out of the boats in shallow water as well as moving around the boat during the session.

Unfortunately PSKC doesn't have the facilities and equipment to provide sailing for those with restricted mobility or physical disability. We would suggest anyone with a disability looking to take part in Push the Boat Out get in touch with the Royal Yachting Association via the Push the Boat Out website:

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The boatyard is accessed directly from Portobello Promenade and there is no vehicle access or parking. Parking is available on nearby streets but please be aware that these can get very busy at weekend. The boatyard is a short walk from Portobello High Street which is well served by local buses.

If I like sailing can I join PKSC?

Yes! Membership information will be available on the day and we'll be encouraging anyone interested to join up.

Anyone who can't make the 26th May should get in touch about other opportunities to try sailing with PKSC.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
